The Toro 2000 series mower will always be near and dear to my heart. This was actually the first commercial zero turn mower I ever purchased for my lawn care business when I was about 16. At that time, the mower did really well. It was the perfect mower that really helped me take my business to the next level in terms of productivity.
The Toro Z Master 2000 Series zero turn has been updated in some major ways. The mower not only looks a lot better, it has some mechanical upgrades that really make this mower stand out from others. Below is a picture of the mower I demoed. I almost didn't even recognize it as a 2000 Series. It looks so big and flashy in person, it's crazy.
Between the high-powered Toro and Kawasaki engines, 24-inch rear tires, tubular frame, and turbo force steel deck, it definitely has some impressive machinery. The sleek design is also extremely user-friendly and comes with features that make it easy to use on a day-to-day basis.

Power
Engine power is a factor you don’t want to skip because that’s what drives the machine and ensures you’re getting value for your money. With this model, you get to choose between two engine options depending on your needs and preferences. You can either get a 24.5 HP Toro engine with an HDAC motor or pick the heavy-duty Kawasaki FX engine. You can choose between a 23.5 HP or 24.5 HP Kawasaki engine depending on your horsepower needs.
Before I go any further, I must explain the Toro engine situation and my opinion. Yes, Toro has their “own” engine. However, it is simply a private labeled engine. Loncin, the Chinese engine manufacture is who builds the engine. They have gained some traction lately… Gravely even has their engines, branded “Gravely”, on a few mowers.
I was at first skeptical of these engines, I still probably wouldn't buy one, but they aren't bad engines. Essentially, they look like Kawasaki knockoffs with a much lower price. I think Toro standing behind the engine and warranting it gives me confidence in these engines. If it were any of these smaller brands, I would be very skeptical. If you have one of these engines, let me know in the comments if you like it.
The Toro 2000 series also comes with Hydro-Gear transaxles. Depending on the model you get it will have either the ZT-3400 or ZT-3800. Both of these transaxles are high quality and considered commercial grade. The ZT-3800 are slightly better, but they are also fairly new. They really only started entering the market around late 2019 and early 2020.
Features
- Commercial grade engine options
- Commercial grade transaxles (ZT-3400 and ZT-3800)
- Large deck size offerings
- Turbo Force deck
- Suspension seat or MyRide Suspension
- Kenda Reaper tires available on select models
Cut Quality
The Toro 2000 series comes with the usual Turbo Force deck that is made of 7 and 10 gauge steel. This is the same deck that has been around for a long time. It provides a great cut and has been trusted by many for years.
The Turbo Force deck is also a great mulching deck because of its depth. The deck gets a lot of lift and does a great job of mulching grass.
Overall, the Turbo Force deck is going to provide a high quality cut in many different applications. I demoed this mower and the cut quality was really good.
Durability
The Toro 2000 series zero turn was built tough before and it appears the new models are built even tougher. They are an entry-level commercial mower that is perfect for the part-time lawn care owner or large acreage homeowner. In those two applications, this mower should last a very long time.
Comfort
Toro’s MyRide Suspension System is an aspect that sets its designs apart from other lawn mower brands. If you choose to get a MyRide model of the 2000 series you will experience a much more comfortable ride. It does come with a price tag, but it may be worth it for the right situation or person.
If you get one of the models without MyRide, you will get the high-back suspension seat that the MyRide models don't have. These won't be quite as comfortable but they are still a pretty nice ride. I will say the new seats from Toro are a huge improvement from their past seats.
Aesthetics
Not that this really matters in terms of using the mower, but the new Toro 2000 series is a really good-looking mower. The new seats, rims, tires, and designs look so good. Even the tires on the mower look much better. See below one of the first Toro 2000 series that was sent to a dealer. This was my first impression of the mower.

Price
The price of the Toro 2000 series is anywhere from around $8,000 – $10,000 depending on the model and dealer. This is a pretty good price considering the updates and specs of the mower.
Wrapping It Up
Overall, the Toro Z Master 2000 Series zero-turn mowers are a good option for this price bracket and have a lot to offer in terms of quality features and cutting results. The deck options let you add a certain level of customization to the process. You can also choose between two high-powered engines.
The models range from a deck size of 48 inches to 60 inches, while the speeds go up to 18,500 feet per minute. The design is meant to help you make the process of mowing less strenuous and time-consuming. And it delivers on all accounts. All in all, this is a solid mower!

Thanks for this Toro 2000 review. I am trying to decide between this mower, the Hustler Fastrak SDX, or the Bad Boy Maverick HD. If there’s other brands in the $8k-$9k price range that you recommend please through them in. Any help you could provide in my decision making would be well accepted. Thanks.
Those are all good. May be worth looking into the Scag Patriot and Ferris IS700 or ISX800 too.
