However, we know that technology always keeps changing and is never static. Therefore, there are a few exciting and interesting innovations as far as electric turn mowers are concerned. While the design features are becoming more streamlined, some technological improvements are in tune with changing times and situations.

Today's three biggest technological innovations are mobile phone technology, computers, and the internet. Hence, we are now seeing the incorporation of these technologies in modern-day electric turn mowers.

The motors that power the mowers are becoming more powerful and more fuel-efficient. Further, technologies like Bluetooth and a few other innovations are helping in the remote operation of the zero turn electric turn mowers.

The amalgamation of mobile phone technology with the zero turn electric turn mowers is quite interesting and fascinating. It helps bring about improved efficiency and safer use of electric turn mowers. Gas Vs Electric

Gas mowers still continue to be used in many homes and other places. However, there is no doubt that electric lawn mowers are beginning to capture the imagination and markets dominated by gas mowers. Let us briefly look at gas and electric lawn mowers, and we may have reasons to believe that it makes better sense to go in for zero turn electric mowers.

What is special about gas mowers?

Gas mowers have been in use for many decades now, and they certainly have some functional advantages. They are powerful and may be able to cut through any grass. Further, they have a decent run time, and depending on the fuel tank capacity, you can use them for extended periods of time in one go.

They are also known for being robust and durable. If you have a wet lawn, gas mowers still continue to offer unmatched performances. However, they require regular maintenance, and you could be stuck if you run out of gas in your home. They are not as safe as electric mowers because they spin the blades at a much faster pace.

What is special about electric lawn mowers?

Many people have started moving over the electric mowers with zero turn facilities because of their convenience and easy maintenance. Further, they have infinite run time, and once you have plugged them into the power source, you need not bother about running out of fuel or gas. In the absence of any storage tank, they are lightweight and easy to port around. Modern-day mowers also come with remote operation facilities; therefore, the problem of cables may also be a thing of the past.

Pros and Cons of Electric Mowers

  • They are easy to use and easy to maintain.
  • They are versatile and are available in different power capacities.
  • You do not run the risk of running out of fuel when you are halfway through the job.

You also could go in for these mowers if you do not want to spend a lot of time and money on maintenance.

Are electric mowers better than gas mowers?

There are reasons to believe that electric mowers are better than gas mowers. They do not depend on the availability of gas at all points in time. Once recharged, electric mowers can work for reasonably long periods of time. They are easy on maintenance and upkeep. Further, they are less noisy, and they are environmentally friendly.

Yard Size and Ground Type

Electric mowers can easily handle yards of around 2 to 3.5 acres. Further, they also can work well on even and uneven ground types. However, in the case of wet grounds, many times it has been found that electric mowers may not be the best choice.

If you are looking for home mowing needs, any mower with a horsepower of 11 to 25 would be enough. In case of commercial uses, look for mowers having HP of around 25 to 37.

Battery Life and Runtime

Most electric mowers offer extremely impressive runtime ranging from 3 hours to 7 hours. If you invest in high-quality mowers with lithium batteries, you can get a battery life of around 3 to 4 years. The runtime would directly depend on the capacity of the batteries.

Which Battery is Best?

There are two different types of batteries that are being used in mowers. These are Lithium-Ion and Lead-Acid. It would always be better to go in for lithium-ion batteries. They have a longer life, are more powerful, and require lower maintenance when compared to lead-acid deep cycle batteries.

The pricing of the electric mowers depends on various factors, including capacity, size, power, blade size, and so on. Ideally, the price range could be anywhere between $3000 to $5000, and you have lower-end models too that are priced around $2500

Are electric riding mowers worth it?

Yes, electric riding mowers are worth every dollar because of their ease of operation, ability to cover large areas, lower maintenance cost, and most importantly, because they are less noisy and eco-friendly.

  1. I’m in the market for an electric zero turn mower and just finished reading the January 21 article on the seven best. Gravely should not have even thrown their hat in this mix. It’s quite obvious by pricing their intentions are not serious. I think they just wanted to show that they could put their hands on the technical components if that’s what people wanted. For the price they are charging using off the self components one would expect a fully autonomous zero turn with lidar sensors and cameras!

  2. I have a Ryobi Zero Turn 100ah mower. The batteries failed just before the one year warranty expired. After some haggling I received new ones, but it is a do it yourself affair to change them. If this set meets the same fate I’m sunk as replacement cost is prohibitive. It’s a great mower but had others been out last year I may have bought elsewhere.

  3. ” In the absence of any storage tank, they are lightweight and easy to port around. Modern day mowers also come with remote operation facilities and therefore the problem of cables may also be a thing of the past”

This comment makes no sense. The typical batteries would be heavier than a fuel tank. E.g: The Gravely can have up to 6×50 lbs batteries. That is an extra 500 LBS. I do not get the “cable” comment?..Has there ever been a power-cord operated mower? AFAIK they are all battery operated. What is this “problem of cables” ?

The fundamental issue with pro electric mowers for me: As customer would hesitate coughing up 10-30K -s for a mower with a 2-5 year limited hours warranty and risking an expensive battery replacement on top of the insultingly high cost. The quality has to come down to the point where they are competitive with high end gas powered mowers, so that the advantages can come into play. My benchmark is: I can buy an electric car for 30K, with a far superior, water cooled propulsion battery and a lot more substantial build than a basically simple mower in comparison. The electric car would come with far more engineering and systems packed into it than the mower ( cruise control, telematics, 5 comfortable seats, fast charging, massive battery name a few)
Eelctric Mover manufacturers need to rethink their pricing, and bring it more in line with actual costs. What is so special about an electric mower that it has to cost a king’s ransom?
” They do not depend on availability of gas “: This is comment is backwards… Gasoline is readily available as long as you have a gas can with you, even in the middle of the jungle. Refill is easy and fast. Batteries take hours to recharge and must have electric power available to recharge. If you are in a remote area, that is more of a problem than gasoline.
The huge disadvantage of “pro” electric mowers such as the Gravely and Greeworks is their currently excessive cost. The “light residential” electric mowers have batteries with questionable longevity, working time and weak warranties.

  4. This would be much more helpful if it were clearer which mowers are lead and which are lithium. Maybe with to categories.

  5. I have the EGO Z6 42″ ZTR and is AWESOME ! After 6 months of use in Florida it has been flawless. This is the Tesla of ZTR mowers.

    1. It really depends which mower you are referring to… they vary quite a bit. For example, the EGO’s batteries are about $450 while the Gravely EVZT batteries are probably $1-2,000.

  6. These mower don’t offer enough value and fun design for our money. Even those mower that are$7K and up should have lights roll bars and solar covers tops etc.
im going to get commercial gas demo unit.

  7. This review doesn’t compare to gas more reviews. No mention of Tire Size, AirRideSeats, E-Brake location, metering for battery voltage, and most important the transmission type. This review appears to be more of an advertisement than comparison.
I’m still leaning towards gas ZT for now. The comments on prices is spot on… ZT manufacturers are obviously greedy and trying to get on the EVST train. Shame on them…
