Husqvarna Z254 Zero Turn Review

The Husqvarna Z254 zero turn is a very popular residential mower. It has a very simple design and a fan favorite of many homeowners for several years. When I first demoed this mower I was quickly surprised by its performance. It was so good that I actually added it to my best mowers under $3000 article.

A residential zero turn, like this one, will make quick work of your lawn maintenance. You will be able to mow your lawn in much less time than a riding lawn mower or push mower.

Let's check out the details!

Power

This mower offers a 26HP Kohler, 24 HP Briggs & Stratton, or a 21.5HP Kawasaki engine. Either one will provide plenty of power for the average homeowner.

The Husqvarna z254 mower has Hydro-Gear ZT-2200 transaxles. These are also known as Hydro-Gear EZT transaxles. These allow the mower to travel up to 6.5 mph. These transaxles do fine for this size mower. They are the industry standard, on almost ever zero turn mower around the $3,000 range.

This mower is equipped with an automatic choke system. This feature will enable you to start the mower very easily. It is a little similar to an EFI-style engine in terms of starting the mower.

  • Stamp and Fabricated Deck options

  • Ergonomic control panel
  • 26, 24, or 23 HP engine

Cut Quality

The overall cut quality of the Husqvarna Z254 lawn mower is very good. Both the stamped and fabricated decks do a very good job of cutting grass. I personally prefer a fabricated deck, since they usually hold up for a longer period of time, and this deck cut great. The grass lift of this deck is pretty good which makes side discharging and mulching grass a solid option.

The only thing I really dislike about their deck is the chute guard being plastic. I also prefer a rubber guard so if you hit something it has more give. This allows it to last much longer.

Durability

The Husqvarna Z254 riding mower has an 11-gauge or 10-gauge steel deck, making it durable, and allow it to last a long time. The frame of the mower is also well built. This mower will definitely withstand a decent amount of abuse.

The 11-gauge stamped, reinforced steel cutting deck is still well built. These usually don't hold up as well as a fabricated deck but it will still last a long time. The 10-gauge fabricated cutting deck is definitely worth the extra money. This deck will offer a sturdier build and thicker metal.

Also, the engine's air filtration system increases airflow, extending your mower's life. This is equipment that will serve you for a very long time without having to worry about the wear and tear issue.

Comfort

This mower is overall fairly comfortable. It doesn't have a suspension seat or anything like the higher-priced zero turns, but the seat isn't too bad. On the Z254F model, you will find the high back seat. This will add a decent amount of comfort and support to your back.

z254F Seat

The Z254 isn't going to blow you away with its comfort, but most homeowner zero turns aren't. Since a zero turn will speed up your mowing time and most won't be mowing for over 30-60 minutes at a time, it isn't a huge game-changer.

Aesthetics

Husqvarna's Z254 has a great look to it… especially the Z254F models. With the primary orange color, it has a grey accent color that looks pretty good. I think the fabricated deck also looks very good.

This is achieved by the choice of excellent seat material that proceeds to add another layer of brilliance to the mower. Overall, the look of this mower is very good. It is a sleek and simple design that Husqvarna has stuck with for some time now.

Safety

Both the front and the rear wheels are spread and positioned in a way that they offer comfort and safety in that the weight of the machine evenly distributed across the whole unit. This permits for a safer stand and makes the machine more efficient while mowing uphill.

The mower also has all of the standard safety switches. This includes the safety switch in the seat so if you fall off the mower it will turn off.

There are very many dealers out there, and we would advise that you do your research well before you can invest in this machine. It is affordable and worth its value. You can check the price of two online sellers we have partnered with below.

  1. I have had a z254 zero turn husqavarna for the past 7 years. I was very disappointed with the manufacturer because the linkage supports that hold the mower deck to the machine cracked and the mower deck is supposed to have a 10 year warranty how ever the manufacturer refused to replace the broken mower deck or even pay to have it repaired.
